Een thuis voor jongeren met een verstandelijke handicap
Bob Hendrikx vertelt over Het Vriendenhuis, een thuis voor jongvolwassenen met een verstandelijke handicap.
‘Hoe hoger de nood, hoe harder ouders aan oplossingen timmeren'
Hoe begin je als oudergroep aan een woonproject? Als iemand hier veel kan over vertellen, is dat ongetwijfeld Bob Hendrikx die met de vzw Think Out of the Box mee aan de wieg stond van Het Vriendenhuis, een van de eerste ouderprojecten in Vlaanderen.
Bob Hendrix: “Je kan stellen dat we pioniers waren. Onze vzw Think Out of The Box werd in januari 2012 opgericht. In september 2012, acht maanden later, zijn onze gasten in het huis getrokken. Dat is dus zeer snel verlopen. Natuurlijk zaten we met de ouders al vroeger samen, maar dat was informeel. Toen er echt perspectief was – er kwam een huis vrij waarvan we vonden dat het een goede plek was om onze kinderen onder te brengen – is het heel snel gegaan. Uiteraard speelde de ‘Sense of Urgency’: de meeste van onze jongeren waren toen schoolverlaters zonder zicht op een oplossing. Onze zoon Hans (waar- over verder meer – red.) was toen al een jaar in ‘kortverblijf’.”

Hendrikx: “In 2012 draaide Telefacts een reportage over ons project. We werden overstelpt met vragen die we onmogelijk alle- maal zelf konden beantwoorden. Toen hebben een aantal mensen en organisaties – waar- onder ook Inclusie Vlaanderen, de voorloper van STAN - de handen in elkaar geslagen en ontstond de vzw GiPSo die kleinschalige woon- en dagbestedingsprojecten adviseert en ondersteunt.

Eind 2016 ging ik voor 2 jaar als coach voor GiPSo aan de slag om opstartende projecten te begeleiden. Daarna bleef ik actief binnen het Platform Ouderprojecten. Ik probeer mensen vooruit te helpen, te waarschuwen voor valkui- len waar anderen misschien zijn ingetuimeld. We verzamelen goede (of minder goede, maar leerzame) praktijken en reiken denkpistes aan. We communiceren veel en vaak, wisselen ervaringen uit, kunnen bij elkaar terecht met vragen die ook snel – al beproefde - antwoorden opleveren.
De ‘kennis van het veld’ die ik gedurende al die jaren heb verzameld, ook en vooral via andere oudergroepen, geeft daar richting en vorm aan. Maar er staan geen uren op, al heb ik als bedrijfsleider een fulltime job en een ouderrol te vervullen. Het resultaat: dat mensen een stuk verder kunnen, dat is voor mij het belangrijkste”.
‘Ik probeer mensen te waarschuwen voor de valkuilen waar anderen misschien zijn ingetuimeld’
Sense of urgency
Bob’s zoon Hans (31) is een van de bewoners van Het Vriendenhuis. Hans ging op internaat op zijn 10 jaar, op zijn 21 stopte dit en verbleef hij een jaar ‘in kortverblijf’ om dan in het Vriendenhuis te kunnen instappen.
Bob Hendrikx: “Het is, zoals gezegd, heel snel gegaan. Wanneer je kijkt naar bijvoorbeeld HONK (het woonproject in Leuven dat in het vorige STAN-magazine aan bod kwam, lees het artikel hier) of Villa Vief, dan zie je dat zij wèl ruim de tijd konden nemen om na te denken, het eens te worden en actie te ondernemen. Bij ons kon dat dus niet.

Mijn oudste zoon die inmiddels 31 is, zat van zijn tiende levensjaar op internaat vanwege agressie binnen het gezin, vooral ten aanzien van zijn jongere broer en zus. Mijn jongste zoon heeft zijn haar wat kunnen laten groeien toen de oudste het huis uit was: die grabbelde hem anders steevast pijnlijk bij de haardos. Nu ben ik een man met een bijzonder straffe kinderwens, maar dit was niet vol te houden.
'Ik heb 20 jaar als ‘persoonlijke begeleider’ van onze Hans op familiefeesten gestaan, om de schade die hij er zou kunnen aanrichten te beperken'.
Wellicht is het niet eens 20 jaar geweest, want uiteindelijk word je zelden nog op familiefeesten gevraagd. Dan denk je toch: ‘De mensen weten niet beter’.
En wat is het probleem? Die jongen wil alsmaar lachen, en deugniet zijn is zo plezant! Hij heeft ook een enorme ‘crush’ op expressieve gezichten. En wat is er expressiever dan wenen? Toen hij twee jaar oud was, vroeg hij aan een vrouw die op bezoek was: “Mevrouw wenen”! Mensen huilen dan op commando om een kind te plezieren, maar dat blijft niet duren. Dan gaat hij manieren zoeken om mensen toch te laten wenen… Hij was acht of tien jaar oud toen hij op een communiefeest, het was warm, de kinderen speelden waterspelletjes een glas fruitsap over zijn nichtje goot. Het nichtje, van wie hij weet: als ik daar iets mee uithaal, die reageert het felst.
In onze familie wist iedereen wat er aan de hand was met Hans, maar daarbuiten was dat vaak niet het geval. Daar kregen we vreemde blikken omdat de mensen op het eerste gezicht niets ‘verkeerds’ aan onze zoon zagen."
'Ik kan je vertellen: wij waren jaloers op mensen met kinderen met het syndroom van Down. Dat kènnen de mensen tenminste.'
Solidariteit
Bob: ”Toen Hans 21 werd, stopte het internaat en kwam hij op ‘de wachtlijst’ terecht. Dan ga je echt wel oplossingen zoeken, ook buiten het bestaande circuit. De ‘sense of urgency’ hangt daar voor mij sterk mee samen. Als je echt de tijd kan nemen om een groep te bouwen, zoals HONK, dan kan je alles beter uitwerken. Je blijft wel altijd met de vraag zitten: ‘Waar gaan we onze kinderen nu zetten’? Zoals bij HONK: In Leuven, of links of rechts van Leuven?
“De locatie kan, eenmaal een groep is gevormd, een breekpunt zijn. Hoe sterker je groep reeds rond inhoudelijke punten eensgezind is, hoe kleiner dat risico. Ons Huis zou eerst in Hemiksem komen, het is Schilde geworden. Maar hoe hoger de nood, hoe harder ouders aan oplossingen timmeren, zo simpel is het. Er moet een menselijke oplossing komen, waar dan ook. Voor mij persoonlijk viel Schilde wel goed, want daar wonen wij in de buurt, maar voor de mensen uit Aartselaar werd de afstand ineens eens stuk groter! En zij zaten ook met hun handen in het haar… ‘We hebben niks en we zitten met een wachtlijst’. ”
Communicatie
“Er is veel aandacht nodig voor communicatie met elkaar, onderlinge afspraken maken, de solidariteit tussen de bewoners verkennen en de limieten aftasten die zich daarbij stellen. Er komen hopen mensen op ouderinitiatieven af die denken: ‘Daar heb je geen budget nodig’. Dat klopt ook wel, maar anderzijds kan je beslist geen project starten voor 15 mensen van wie er niemand een budget heeft. Of het kan wél, maar dan moet je ook heel anders te werk gaan.
Ik zie ook dit: mensen die jaren worstelen om een project op te starten, ik heb het dan over woonprojecten, een dagbesteding is eenvoudiger neer te zetten. Binnen de groep moeten véél sluitende afspraken worden gemaakt en ook de solidariteitsregels op punt gezet worden.
Wat dat betreft was voor ons een belangrijk element dat we het huis niet hoefden te kopen: we hebben een investeringsmaatschappij gevonden, Inclusie Invest, die het huis aan ons verhuurt. Belangrijk is om de solidariteit tussen de ouders niet te verbreken. Gesteld dat we het pand met drie of vier ouders hadden gekocht, bestond de vzw wellicht niet meer.”

Oplossingen op maat
“We streven naar een zo vraaggestuurd mogelijke werking, waarbij we de zelfontplooiing en het zich goed voelen van onze bewoners voorop stellen. De solidariteit binnen ouderprojecten moet wel helpen bij de haalbaarheid van de projecten. Door solidair te zijn op financieel vlak, kunnen we het aan om een aantal bewoners zonder budget op te nemen. Door solidair te zijn qua engagement, moeten we alle ouders betrokken kunnen laten voelen, elk op hun manier en volgens hun eigen ritme.”

Bob Hendrikx: “Je kan het geluk ook maar afdwingen als je stappen blijft zetten, naar buiten komt met je verhaal, bondgenoten kan zoeken en vinden. En centen ook, uiteindelijk, maar zonder die voorgaande stappen hoef je daar ook niet op te rekenen! Ervaring van zeer veel projecten uit ons platform leert ons dat de meeste projecten er wel in slagen om dit geluk daadwerkelijk af te dwingen… en dat doe je maar als je naar buiten komt met je verhaal”.
