Tot juni van dit jaar zit hij op school. Dan wacht een onzekere toekomst in volwassenheid, waarvoor nieuwe oplossingen moeten worden gezocht. Die ingewikkelde administratieve omschakeling van jeugd naar volwassenheid in ons land, is vaak de aanleiding om zelf initiatieven te overwegen. Het is in dit gezin niet anders:
Mama Sabine Vagenende: “In 2002 hebben we een Persoonlijk Assistentie Budget (PAB) aangevraagd, waardoor de overgang naar het Persoons Volgend Budget (PVB) vlotter gaat, maar we hebben nog steeds geen geschikte dagbesteding gevonden en maken ons grote zorgen over de verdere toekomst. Glorian kan gerust nog een 5-tal jaren bij ons thuis wonen, langer misschien ook. Maar mijn man en ik zijn inmiddels 50-plus, hoelang gaan we dat allemaal nog volhouden?”
“We hebben al verschillende zorgcentra in de omgeving bezocht, maar hebben niets gevonden dat Glorian ook kon bekoren. Zijn grootste angst is om bij oude mensen terecht te komen en we stellen zelf toch ook vast dat instellingen voor volwassenen niet echt berekend zijn op de komst van jongeren, het aanbod is niet op hen afgestemd. Zo heeft Glorian veel belangstelling voor muziek, toneel, etc.”
Coronabeperkingen maken het ‘sfeer snuiven’ in zorginstellingen beslist niet eenvoudiger.
Opnieuw op zoek
Het was al een zoektocht, jaren geleden naar een fijne school. “Glorian zat eerst op een gewone school maar was vaker ziek dan een gezond kind. Inclusief onderwijs werd aangemoedigd, maar de leerkracht op school verklaarde dat dit in haar klas niet langer kon. Dus werd Glorian naar het Bijzonder Onderwijs doorverwezen. Type 1, voor mentale beperkingen. Glorian leerde amper iets nieuws bij op school, de nadruk lag er helemaal op zelfredzaamheid. Maar je wil als ouder toch dat je kind nog wat kennis opdoet ook, op zo’n jonge leeftijd nog.”
De busritten naar school leverden nieuwe beperkingen op
“Dat was verder van huis, hij moest dus met het busje van school mee, dat uiteraard een rondrit maakt om iedereen op te halen. Hij had last van de lange busritten, anderhalf uur, 2 keer per dag en moest telkens overgeven. Dat valt niet vol te houden.”
Niet fijn voor Glorian, niet voor het personeel of de andere kinderen op de bus en niet voor de ouders.
“We hebben dan een tandemfiets gekocht, zo kon Glorian vooraan zitten en reden we dan beurtelings, mijn man of ik, in een kwartiertje naar school.
Er zijn wel wat scholenwissels geweest, we hebben hemel en aarde verzet om Glorian in type 4 te krijgen (voor fysieke beperkingen, Glorian’s beperkingen schommelen tussen de 2), maar geen CLB te vinden die dat ook wou adviseren. Dan loop je als moeder met je kop tegen de muur en barst je in tranen uit. Jan, die bleef er koelbloedig bij en ging dapper door met zoeken. Uiteindelijk heeft het CLB in Sint-Niklaas de overstap wél mogelijk gemaakt, in een wip! En toen is Glorian eindelijk, op zijn 13e, op zijn plekje gevallen in Sint-Lodewijk in Wetteren.”
En de spijt dat dit helaas snel gaat eindigen, weerklinkt in de stiltes tussen de zinnen.
Leven in de bakkerij
Het gezin staat door de complicaties bij de handicap van hun zoon, al zijn ze niet eens van medische aard, al vele jaren zwaar onder druk. Jan en Sabine hadden een goed draaiende bakkerij. De druk die zo’n zoektocht op een gezin legt is niet min. De bakkerij die ze Jan en Sabine samen draaiend hielden, werd stopgezet.
“Ik ben toen 6 jaar thuis gebleven, Jan is les gaan geven in bakkersscholen, ook in avondonderwijs, deed vaak interims. 6 jaar later hebben we een nieuwe bakkerij geopend, maar ook die hebben we uiteindelijk weer moeten stopzetten. Dit keer ben ik het die gaat werken, als magazijnier bij Collect & Go. Dat is zwaar werk, maar het gaat. Jan neemt het grootste deel van de zorg voor Glorian op zich.”
De jonge Glorian had zelf ook een fijne job gevonden, pre-Corona: hij gaf ondersteuning in een kleuterklas, wat hij heel leuk vond om te doen, maar dat is uiteraard allemaal stilgevallen, net als de toneelles, de scouts en andere buitenschoolse activiteiten.
Wat doet dat met een jong mens? “Glorian houdt zich recht in zijn bubbel op school, waar hij zich echt goed voelt”, Sabine klinkt prompt een stuk enthousiaster: “De leefgroepwerking is er super, ze spelen in op de belangstellingen binnen de groep, moedigen de gasten aan om initiatief te nemen, zo zijn ze met een groepje van 5 filmpjes beginnen maken, Comedy toppers… Dat vonden ze natuurlijk geweldig om te doen.”
Begin februari krijgen valt er plots heuglijk niews uit de lucht. “Morgen gaan we op intakegesprek bij Brake-Out, een dagbestedingsproject voor jongeren van 18 tot 30 jaar, met een aanbod dat op die leeftijd is gericht”. En: “Glorian is dolenthousiast”! We duimen met z’n allen mee…
Inclusieve woning
Maar de vruchteloze omzwervingen door instellingen en een administratief oerwoud vol regels en procedures, dat zien zelfredzame mensen, ondernemers van nature, niet meer zitten. Integendeel: ze kochten een stuk grond om er een inclusieve woning op te bouwen. Voor Glorian en Co, hopen ze een kleinschalig woonproject te ontwikkelen met een 6-tal units, waarvoor men nu partners zoekt. Het heeft nog even tijd.
“We hebben al een grote woning in Serskamp, waar we voor 3 jonge mensen het wonen zouden kunnen opstarten zonder al te grote kosten te moeten maken, zoals voor een nieuwbouwproject. We zijn dus met de burgemeester gaan praten, want er moet dan wel een bestemmingswijziging komen, nu staat ons huis als gezinswoning ingeschreven bij Stedenbouw. De burgemeester zou het bekijken, maar we kregen nog geen antwoord. Er kwam ook al eens een geïnteresseerd ouderpaar een kijkje nemen, maar we hebben niets meer van hen gehoord.”
Jan en Sabine zoeken dus contact met andere ouders uit de regio Wetteren, Oost-Vlaanderen. Een eerste stap naar een nieuw ouderinitiatief, waarbij GiPSo zich als GPS toont doorheen een steeds wisselend landschap van reglementeringen, maar ook rond de ontwikkeling van een gedragen visie, groepsvorming, expertise inroepen en stappenplannen maken.
