Lode Verschingel: “We zijn 5 jaar geleden begonnen met dagbesteding, zodat de vriendschappen van onze kinderen die op school werden gesmeed verder uitgebouwd konden worden. De bouwwerken zijn dit jaar op 17 mei gestart en in het najaar van 2022 zal het HONKhuis instapklaar zijn. HONK heeft dan welgeteld 10 jaar aan de weg getimmerd.”
Hoe het begon
"Onze kinderen Marie en Ella en de andere HONK-ers liepen school in Ter Bank, Bijzonder Onderwijs in Heverlee. Aan de schoolpoort waar ouders weleens een babbeltje slaan, viel het woord 'wachtlijsten'. Lut Gailly anticipeerde sterk op wat zich in Vlaanderen op dat vlak nog zou gaan afspelen. Er werd een vergadering belegd in De Schorre in Boom, waar maar liefst 100 ouders aanwezig waren”.

Lode: “Dat kwam door het verschil in zorgvraag, want er is toch een groot verschil tussen mensen met een lichte of matige beperking en wanneer er ook fysieke beperkingen bijkomen. We hadden 2 zwaar autistische profielen in de groep en iemand die ook in een rolstoel zat.

Met het woonproject in zicht ging ook HONK op zoek naar een vergunde zorgaanbieder. “In Leuven kwam Alvinnenberg meteen op de voorgrond, een voorziening die ook historische banden heeft met Ter Bank waar onze kinderen school liepen. Er wordt nu toegewerkt naar een protocol van samenwerking, dat van start zal gaan rond orthopedagogische ondersteuning. Wanneer zich een zwaardere zorgvraag aandient, moeten we toch oplossingen kunnen voorzien.

De Leuvense Universiteit was er grotendeels eigenaar van en er stond ook de Sint-Pieterskliniek, die eigenlijk nooit helemaal in gebruik werd genomen. Op die plaats komt een nieuwe zaal voor podiumkunsten. Het cohousingproject Botanico aan de andere zijde van de site is al bewoond en er komen nieuwe woongelegenheden, een woonzorgcentrum, assistentiewoningen en een welzijnstoren waar heel wat eerstelijnsdiensten samengebracht worden.
Bovendien zal de site ook volledig verkeersvrij worden en komt er een groot park. Daarmee waren we echt overtuigd. Veel locaties en voorzieningen waar we met onze jongeren gebruik van maken, bevinden zich binnen wandelafstand: de circusschool en de fitnesszaal waar we met de gasten regelmatig heengaan, de bibliotheek, winkels die we vaak bezoeken of waar ze begeleid werken…
We hebben een goede samenwerking met de stad Leuven, dus ook in de cafetaria en vestiaire van de nieuwe podiumkunstenzaal verwachten we een aantal HONKers tewerk te stellen.”

“Nog een kantelpunt was het feit dat we ons gebouw van 4 verdiepingen op de Hertogensite moesten aankopen. Ook al is het duur - € 2,575 miljoen - het is niet eens de reële commerciële prijs. Er werden een aantal afspraken vastgelegd wat bewoning op de site betreft. Zo komen er 540 woonentiteiten waarvan 10 % sociaal bestemd moest worden. Daarvan moest zo’n derde bestemd worden voor een welzijnsproject. Dat zijn wij dus. En die 10 % moet aan een sociaal tarief verkocht worden.
Voor 12 ouderparen die veiligheidshalve liever wilden huren, hikten we inderdaad wel tegen zo’n pittig bedrag aan. We hebben dan een financieel plan opgemaakt voor € 2,8 miljoen, want het huis moet tenslotte toch ook nog ingericht worden en er zijn nog extra kosten voor parkeerplaatsen...
Gelukkig hebben we doorheen de jaren, dankzij giften en tal van activiteiten, een niet onaardige spaarpot opgebouwd van toch enkele honderdduizenden euro.
