Wat ooit begon als een knutselatelier mondde uit in een woonproject met koffiehuisje waar jongvolwassenen met een beperking kunnen leven en werken.
Reportage: Een rondleiding in de Kompanie
Een vrijdagochtend in mei: het Koffiehuis van het De Kompanie in Mortsel zit al aardig vol. Op een groot scherm speelt het filmpje van de plechtige opening van dit project waar 16 (jong-)volwassenen met een beperking wonen en nog eens een 20-tal externen naar de dagbesteding komen. Collega Lies en onder- getekende nippen aan een capuccino, die met een perfecte melkschuimlaag aan onze ‘Donald Ducktafel’ wordt geserveerd door Martine een van de mensen die hier onder- dak vond. Met haar 62 jaren op de teller is ze de oudste bewoonster. Naast ons, aan tafel Mickey Mouse, bestelt een koppel een soep van de dag, een man in werkoverall eet met veel smaak een broodje van de dag.
Het is fijn te zien hoe mensen uit de buurt de weg naar dit bijzondere koffiehuisje vinden. “Voor de gasten zijn al die sociale contacten superple- zant”, licht Rita later toe. “Ze mogen mee aan tafel zitten als ze daar zin in hebben of meehelpen… We zijn 4 dagen op de week open en op donderdagavond houden we café-avond. Dan komen familieleden af en blijven het personeel en de stagiairs plakken. Altijd een gezellige drukte, daar doen we het voor.”
Diverse groep
Na de perfecte capuccino en dito afrekening aan de kassa, nemen we plaats in het kan- toortje van Rita en haar man Patrick die de logistieke en technische kant van het bouw- project coördineerde en de facturatie voor zijn rekening neemt. Dochter Annelies (orthopedagoge) is coördinator van het hele project, waartoe ook de polyvalente (feest-)zaal, het Koffiehuisje, bestellingen etc. behoren.
In het totaal werken hier 22 mensen: 11 mensen in vaste dienst plus 11 zorgkundigen via zorgor- ganisatie i-mens.
‘Ik heb veel genetwerkt, we hebben bijna alles gekregen'
“Er kwam 2000 man opdagen op de opening”, blikt Rita terug “Daarvan waren er 400 ingeschreven voor de barbecue; we hebben 240 portie frieten en curryworsten en meer dan 100 broodjes verkocht. Het was complete chaos, maar daar hebben de mensen gelukkig niets van gemerkt. ATV (de regionale zender) kwam op bezoek, en minister Beke was er ook. Hij is maar liefst 3 uur gebleven, luisterde naar iedereen, was oprecht geïnteresseerd. Voor mij is hij veruit de meest empathische minister die we ooit hebben gehad.“
Ook op de opening: de BV’s Karen Daemen en Ben Rottiers, aka Pol de Tremmerie uit de Kampioenen, die het project uit sympathie kwamen ondersteunen en kwistig handtekeningen uitdeelden. Tot grote vreugde van de bewoners en mensen die naar de dagbesteding komen. Rita: “De jongste is net 18 geworden, de oudste is 62. Sommige mensen hebben een lichte mentale beperking, anderen een ernstige motorische beperking gecom- bineerd met autisme. Er is nu ook iemand die doof is. Wij kunnen dat aan: we leren nu allemaal gebarentaal.”
Elke bewoner draagt zijn financiële steentje bij volgens de eigen mogelijkheden. “Het is belangrijk dat iedereen hier kan komen, zonder dat de ouders moeten bijpassen”, benadrukt Rita, “De mensen moeten alles kunnen betalen met max. 80% van hun uitkering. Sommigen kunnen hun eten en medicatie niet zelf betalen. We horen wel eens dat we elitair zijn, maar dat is helemaal niet zo. Ook mensen met een laag budget zijn hier welkom. We investeren veel tijd om zelf aanvragen te doen want de meest mensen hebben recht op veel meer budget.”
Duurzame luxe
De gemeenschappelijke ruimtes die we bezoeken, ogen mooi en comfortabel. Net als de keuken(s) die de vergelijking met een profes- sionele restaurantkeuken kunnen doorstaan. Op plus één valt de ‘snoezelbadkamer’ op met de allures van een spa; de ateliers zijn ruim en van alle nodige materiaal voorzien. Ook de kamers zijn gerieflijke mini-studio’s, inclusief een badkamer met op maat van de bewoner aangepaste sanitaire voorzieningen. Toch is dit alles met een minimumbudget gerealiseerd. “Ik heb heel veel genetwerkt, daardoor is bijna heel de inrichting van ons project gekregen.
We hebben veel geluk gehad omdat we heel veel dingen konden recupereren uit een ziekenhuis hier in de buurt dat zijn deuren sloot. Van kapstokken, rolstoelen, bedden, toiletbeugels tot deurklinken toe! Ook uit de voormalige keuken van Procter & Gamble hebben we vrachtwagens vol materiaal kunnen halen: dit bureau hier, bijvoorbeeld, maar ook de rekken in de voorraadkamer, de koelkasten, wastafels… noem maar op. Alles mooi opgepoetst, net als nieuw.”
‘We zijn helemaal niet elitair: iedereen is hier welkom’
Hoe het begon…
De Kompanie startte in 2013 als bescheiden knutselclubje voor mensen met of zonder beperking. Gaandeweg groeide de vraag en het aanbod. Met zelfgemaakte confituur werd geld in het laatje gebracht, de kleine ruimte barstte uit zijn voegen. “Mijn dochter Jolien heeft een motorische en mentale beperking. En al praat ze wat moeilijk, ze heeft altijd in het inclusief onderwijs gezeten. Eenmaal ze ouder werd,
zochten we hoe we naar een plek waar ze zich goed zou voelen. En dat dit geen gewone voorziening zou zijn, werd al snel duidelijk.
Rita gaf toen nog les aan een school voor verpleegkundigen in Lier, als stagebegeleidster leerde ze de voorzieningen in heel Antwerpen van binnenuit kennen. “In de meeste plaatsen mag je al blij zijn dat je al eens uit gaat wandelen of mag kiezen uit een van de 3 activiteiten…
Ik wou het anders. Bij ons mag iedereen kiezen: wie in de ochtend zin heeft om mee te helpen in de keuken en in de namiddag om huishoudelijk werk te doen of te knutselen, mag dat.“
Rita geflankeerd door haar man Patrick en minister Beke bij de opening van De Kompanie.
“Jolien beschikte al over een PA-budget", gaat Rita verder, "Maar dat is een asociaal leven, het is belangrijk dat er ook contact met leeftijdsgenoten is. Dus: we wilden het zelf doen, met een groepje ouders moesten we de neuzen in dezelfde richting zien te krijgen… We hebben toen contact opgenomen met GiPSo. Er kwam verschillende keren een coach langs, dat heeft ons wel op weg geholpen.”
De Kompanie kreeg ook steun van het ViPA (het Vlaams Infrastructuurfonds). Rita: “We kregen een vergunning als vergunde zorgaanbieder, en de goedkeuring voor 26 externe dagbestedingen. Ja, het is misschien niet zo evident voor ouderprojecten om dit aan te vragen, het is superingewikkeld om een dossier te maken. Maar we wilden het van in het begin goed doen en aan de VIPA-normering beantwoorden.”
Rewind naar mei 2022. De inspanningen hebben hun vruchten afgeworpen. Een van de jongeren, Mathias, die ook een plek in het woonhuis van De Kompanie zou krijgen, heeft het niet gehaald. Hij werd niet vergeten. Zijn droom om ooit, met zijn rolstoel in een boomhut te kunnen zitten, werd gerealiseerd: in de tuin staat, ook al dankzij sponsoring, een heuse boomhut. Het moet de enige hut zijn die ook voor rolstoelgebruikers toegankelijk is… We sluiten ons bezoekje af met een broodje Martino in het Koffiehuis en nemen een
een potje huisgemaakte advocaat-likeur mee naar huis. Voor het goede doel!
