Wie doet verder onderzoek bij een vermoeden van handicap?

Heb je het vermoeden dat je kind een ontwikkelingsachterstand heeft, maar je weet niet precies wat er aan de hand is, dan kun je verder onderzoek laten doen bij de volgende organisaties:

Centrum voor ontwikkelingsstoornissen (COS) – het Centrum voor ontwikkelingsstoornissen doet onderzoek naar gedrags- en ontwikkelingsproblemen bij jonge kinderen, stelt een diagnose samen en geeft advies aan de ouders. Zij worden actief betrokken bij het hele proces. Het centrum stelt alleen de diagnose en verwijst voor verdere behandeling door naar andere diensten en organisaties. In Vlaanderen zijn er vier centra voor ontwikkelingsstoornissen:

Centrum voor Medische Genetica of menselijke erfelijkheid – bij het vermoeden van een erfelijke aandoening of handicap kun je dit laten onderzoeken bij het Centrum voor Medische Genetica. Er zijn vier erkende centra in Vlaanderen en Brussel:

Observatie- en behandelingscentrum (OBC) – wanneer er sprake is van complexe problematiek, is het soms noodzakelijk je kind te laten observeren. Je kind verblijft tijdelijk in een Observatie- en Behandelingscentrum en het team observeert en geeft advies. Als ouder word je betrokken bij de diagnosestelling. 

Revalidatiecentrum – het is mogelijk, dat je kind door je (huis)arts op medische gronden doorverwezen wordt naar een revalidatiecentrum. Hier kan een diagnose gesteld worden door een team van verschillende artsen en hulpverleners.

Oriëntatiecentrum – is je kind 18 jaar of ouder, dan kun je voor advies en een diagnose terecht bij het oriëntatiecentrum.
