Ria Bruyneel, voorzitter van Trefpunt STAN en moeder van Leen, vertelt waarom uw steun zo belangrijk is.
Elk leven heeft een aantal mijlpalen, ijkpunten, scharniermomenten, of hoe je het ook noemt. Voor mij was 3 juni 1986 zo’n dag. Ik werd voor het eerst moeder van een prachtige dochter, Leen.
Samen met de vreugde en euforie van het ouderschap kreeg ik, zoals elke kersverse ouder ook de verpletterende verantwoordelijkheid cadeau. En de zorgen, de twijfel, het schuldgevoel…
Toen duidelijk werd dat Leen niet evolueerde zoals andere baby’s, wisten we nog niet hoe groot de impact zou zijn op ons gezin. Samen leerden we kijken naar de mogelijkheden van Leen, waren blij met elke kleine sprong voorwaarts. Haar broer, anderhalf jaar jonger, nam haar mee op sleeptouw in zijn fantasierijk spel en leerde haar zo heel veel.
In de loop der jaren hebben we op de steun kunnen rekenen van heel veel prachtige mensen: familie, buren, vrienden, leerkrachten, begeleiders en vrijwilligers. En zo maakten we ook kennis met NVHVG en Inclusie Vlaanderen, de voorlopers van STAN Trefpunt VerSTANdelijke handicap.
De vrijetijdsactiviteiten, de infoavonden, de feestelijke bijeenkomsten, we genoten er samen van. Maar vooral: we leerden mensen kennen die in dezelfde situatie zaten, we luisterden naar elkaar en konden onze zorgen al eens kwijt. Of we maakten samen plezier om de zorgen te vergeten! Het duurde dan ook niet lang vooraleer mijn man deel uitmaakte van de bestuursploeg. Na zijn overlijden nam ik deze taak over, eerst plaatselijk bij STAN Brugge, later ook in Brussel.
Leen groeide op tot een pittige jongedame. Eén en al enthousiasme, intense vrolijkheid, uitbundige omhelzingen, maar ook het eindeloze doordrammen, de soms hevige uitbarstingen (vooral als de routine plots veranderde), de korte aandachtsboog waardoor altijd weer opnieuw andere activiteiten moesten gezocht worden. Met de hulp van mijn zoon, familie, vrienden, dagcentrum, jeugdbeweging, kortopvang en later de woonvoorziening lukte het, met vallen en opstaan, om hierin een evenwicht te vinden.
Maar rode draad doorheen al die jaren was altijd STAN! Ik vond er de juiste informatie, een pak activiteiten voor Leen, een vriendengroep waar ik eens mijn hart kon luchten. Maar ook: als bestuurslid – later voorzitter – kon ik iets betekenen voor andere mensen in dezelfde situatie.
11 juli 2020. Totaal onverwacht is Leen thuis overleden. Een enorme schok, én een grote verandering in mijn leven. Alhoewel Leen sinds een 3-tal jaren niet meer thuis woonde, stond mijn hele leven in het teken van haar. Ze laat een grote leemte na.
De zorg voor Leen is weggevallen, maar ik wil me blijven inzetten voor STAN. Vooral nu, in deze moeilijke coronaperiode, hebben veel mensen het dubbel moeilijk. Vertrouwde structuren zijn veranderd, activiteiten zijn weggevallen, mondmaskers en afstandsregels worden niet altijd begrepen, waardoor de kwetsbaarheid nog groter wordt.
Het afgelopen jaar konden veel mensen met een handicap weinig of niet naar huis. Of (vaak bejaarde) ouders namen, uit schrik voor besmetting of omdat de praktische regeling het noodzakelijk maakte, zelf weer voltijds de zorg op. En wanneer zullen àlle mensen met een handicap hun vaccin krijgen?
Laten we van deze coronacrisis dan ook een mijlpaal maken die eindelijk de aandacht vestigt op deze groep mensen, hun kwetsbaarheden én al hun te weinig erkende mogelijkheden.
