Johan Van Holderbeke, voorzitter STAN Gent-Eeklo en leraar in het buitengewoon onderwijs, kroop in de pen naar aanleiding van de discussie rond inclusie die dankzij William Boeva en een recente Pano-reportage weer even de actualiteit beheerst.
Het debat rond inclusie is weer losgebarsten door een open brief die William Boeva schreef over ‘Down the Road’. Hij is van mening dat dit programma absoluut geen inclusie is, terwijl het voor de VRT en anderen wel een voorbeeld van inclusie is. En van het ene woord kwam weer het andere en werd er over en weer geschreven.
Eigenlijk begint volgens mij alles met de begripsverwarring die al zo lang over deze term bestaat. Het is trouwens een term die in mijn studententijd (ik geef toe: lang geleden), nog niet eens bestond.
De meeste mensen zullen inclusie definiëren als ‘alles voor iedereen zo gewoon mogelijk, allemaal hetzelfde onderwijs, dezelfde ontspanningsclubs, dezelfde algemene hulpverlening’… iedereen moet samen hetzelfde kunnen doen. Vanuit dat oogpunt is ‘Down the Road’ inderdaad geen inclusie. Het zijn 6 personen met Down die ‘onder begeleiding’ van twee niet Downers een reis maken. Allicht wel de reis van hun leven, maar niet inclusief. Trouwens, even een lans breken voor al die vrijwilligersorganisaties die hetzelfde al jaren doen, vaak met minder mogelijkheden en zonder dat h’ ‘Down the Road’.
Maar je kan inclusie ook anders definiëren als ‘iedereen die een eigen en gewaardeerde plaats in de samenleving krijgt’.
In ‘Down the Road’ krijgen deze mensen zonder twijfel een eigen plaats. Zij staan in het middelpunt van het programma, het draait om hen. Veel mensen waarderen deze uitzending ook. Dat blijkt uit de negatieve reacties op de open brief van William Boeva. Of de ‘goegemeente’ dan een correct beeld krijgt van wie mensen met Down zijn, wil ik hier niet in de discussie betrekken. Ik betwijfel het, maar dat doet hier niet terzake. Als je op deze manier naar het programma kijkt, is het wel inclusief.
Deze discussie voert me terug naar artikels die ik hierover al lang geleden schreef. In 2012 besteedde het VAPH een volledig nummer van hun tijdschrift ‘ST*RK’ aan het thema inclusie dat toen 15 jaar bestond, bekijk de link hier. En wie stond daar middenin in volle glorie te prijken: Wielemie, Marieke Vervoort die op de paralympics van London eerder dat jaar twee medailles behaald had. Huh… paralympics… een aparte (gesegregeerde) competitie… inclusief? Ja, toch wel, in de tweede betekenis van het woord, de betekenis die ik verkies. Door die medailles en de aandacht die de VRT er aan besteedde, had Marieke Vervoort voorgoed een eigen en zeer gewaardeerde plaats gekregen in de Vlaamse maatschappij.
Ik laat het verder aan de lezers over om te oordelen of ‘Down the Road’ inclusief is of niet.
Nog een laatste woord voor dhr. Boeva. In ‘De Zondag’ van 2 oktober krijgt hij een paginagroot interview. Hij zegt daarin dat hij een stem wil zijn voor mensen met een beperking. Luister naar onze smeekbede meneer Boeva. Wees de stem van àlle mensen met een handicap, ook van degenen die in gelijk wel ‘gewoon’ circuit niet aan bod komen.
Denk aan de mensen die wèl nood hebben aan speciale, aparte ondersteuning. Denk aan de mensen die wèl nood hebben aan buitengewoon ‘gesegregeerd’ onderwijs, want daar leren zij op hun manier deel te nemen aan de maatschappij. Denk aan de mensen die niet aan bod zullen komen in het circuit van de ‘gewone’ ontspanning. Je verwijt dat er voor o.a. G-sport wel subsidies zijn en voor andere zaken niet. Dat is dan misschien omdat G-sport anders nooit levensvatbaar is, niet als aparte club, niet als deelnemers binnen om het even welke club.
Wij van STAN Trefpunt Verstandelijke Handicap, streven in alle geval verder naar het geluk van onze leden met en zonder waarneembare handicap. Als dàt geen inclusie is.
