Broers en/of zussen van een persoon met een handicap worden ook wel brussen genoemd. Zij ervaren vaak al vroeg in hun leven wat het betekent om de zorg te dragen voor een ander persoon.
Er zijn organisaties die speciale aandacht besteden aan brussen, zoals:
- Kadodder in Antwerpen,
- het Balanske in Tielt-Winge,
- Fiola vzw in Sint-Amandsberg,
- de Branding in Kortrijk,
- Dienst Ambulante Begeleiding in Zonhoven,
- Start West-Vlaanderen.
Sommige scholen voor buitengewoon onderwijs hebben een eigen brussenwerking, zoals School aan de waterkant en Sint-Lievenspoort in Gent. Daarnaast zijn er Multifunctionele centra en voorzieningen voor personen met een handicap die vaak aandacht schenken aan brussen. Het kan fijn zijn voor broers en zussen om leeftijdgenoten te ontmoeten die in dezelfde gezinssituatie opgroeien. Vraag zeker na in je eigen omgeving of er een brussen-werking bestaat en wat ze aanbieden.
De Koning Boudewijnstichting heeft een brochure uit gegeven waarin 21 projecten worden voorgesteld die brussen ondersteunen.
