Het is natuurlijk zeer goed dat Annie die leeftijd bereikt heeft, maar er is veel meer dat toch terug even het licht mag zien bij de totale ommekeer van wat de begeleiding voor mentaal gehandicapten en de thuisbegeleiding van de ouders toen nog was.
58 jaar bestaat De Tandem en dan is het meer dan zinvol om als ouders even terug te blikken op hoe de oudervereniging NVHVG in 1964-65 de kern heeft gelegd voor het ontstaan van de vroegtijdige thuisbegeleiding en wat de toen ontwikkelde basisfilosofie was om als ouders te werken aan een betere begeleiding en een betere toekomst voor onze kinderen met een verstandelijke beperking.
Waar is de idee van De Tandem ontstaan?
In augustus 1963 werd onze Peter geboren met het down-syndroom, een natuurgril die toen voor ons zo goed als onbekend was. En... gelukkig kregen we na een paar maanden bezoek van Annie Belpaire-Saverys, die ons voorstelde om samen met enkele andere ouders een Gentse afdeling van het NVHVG te beginnen.
Haar enthousiasme en haar zeer verstandige argumenten overtuigden ons onmiddellijk en we startten toen met nog vier andere ouderparen die afdeling, begin 1964. In die tijd hadden we heel wat kritische bedenkingen bij het zeer beperkt bestaan van goede gehandicaptenzorg en het niveau van het onderwijs voor die kinderen.
Wij legden onze ideeën samen en daaruit bleek dat wij ook, niet alleen als ouders, de zaak wilden aanpakken maar dat wij samen met professionelen onze visie wilden vormen en uitbreiden: wij als gedreven motor van gerichte acties en de professionelen om ons met de voeten op de grond te houden.
Als ouders waren er dan Annie Saverys, Luc en echtgenote Van der Auwermeulen, Lydie Buysse en echtgenoot, de vrederechters Carlos Van Malderen en Lagae, en Lydiane Raes en Erik Steuperaert. Daarnaast waren er Arnold Sevenoo en Antonine Blancquaert die in de beginjaren als onze professionele partners in de raad van bestuur van onze afdeling gekomen zijn er jarenlang gebleven zijn.
En de starters van deze echte omwenteling mogen nog eens vernoemd worden! Tijdens die beginjaren waren ook dichte contacten gegroeid met directeur Jef Van Valckenborgh en orthopedagoog Gaby Van Landschoot van DVC Bernadette.
Na enkele tijd kreeg de gedachte van een vroegtijdige thuisbegeleiding meer en meer vorm en groeiden wij naar een intense samenwerking van ouders en professionelen.
Ondertussen waren ook andere ouders in onze raad van bestuur gekomen, andere ouders die sterk geloofden in wat De Tandem even later zou worden en die onmiddellijk ook plaats namen in de raad van bestuur van de toen pas opgerichte De Tandem: nl. Jan Jongbloet en Rita Hamerlynck.
En een korte tijd na de geboorte van De Tandem kwam.. - u raadt het al - Katrien Windey, als jonge orthopedagoge, vanuit Lovendegem onze ploeg vervoegen. Katrien had toen reeds duidelijke ideeën over hoe een hechte samenwerking tussen ouders en professionelen best kon gerealiseerd worden en hoe vroegtijdige thuisbegeleiding moest aangepakt worden.
De verjaardag van Annie is door enkelen onder ons (zie foto) gevierd om het voor Annie Saverys mogelijk te maken dat op een rustige manier te vieren, uiteraard met Annie zelf, en ook met Angèle Roets en met Katrien Windey en Rita Hamerlynck, die een grote verdienste hebben aan de opbouw en de blijvende opbloei van de Tandem.
