Bart Vertriest bouwde mee aan een kleinschalig woonproject voor zijn zoon Jan-Maarten. Eenmaal dit project was voltooid, voelde de voormalige vertegenwoordiger meteen dat hij zijn ware roeping had gevonden: mensen helpen om zelf de regie over hun leven in handen te nemen.
‘Laat ons de naam STAN met trots uitdragen’

Een nieuwe thuis voor mensen met een beperking
STAN: Hoe ben je bij onze vzw terechtgekomen?
Bart: Mijn jongste zoon Jan-Maarten heeft autisme met een verstandelijke beperking. Samen met mijn vrouw Inge, onze oudste zoon Ward-Jan en een aantal andere ouders hebben we in 2016 het initiatief genomen om een woongelegenheid voor mensen met een beperking. op te zetten. Villa ‘t Valkennest in Oostkamp werd volledig gerenoveerd en aangepast aan de noden en behoeften van de nieuwe bewoners. Bij dit project waren nog twee belangrijke partners betrokken, namelijk Viro (Ter Dreve) en het OLV-Brugge die mee hebben bijgedragen aan de financiering.
Bij de start van het project in 2016 zouden we levensvatbaar zijn met 6 cliënten, maar al snel bleek dat we er 8 tot 10 nodig hadden vanwege de invoering van het Persoonsvolgend Budget (PVB). We hebben enkele aanpassingen gedaan op het gebied van begeleiding en weekendwerking, er is wel altijd een inwonende conciërge aanwezig.
Het is een prachtig inclusief project geworden dat enthousiast wordt onthaald in onze gemeente. Onlangs is er ook Kadet bijgekomen, een lunchbar en winkeltje. Onze gasten kunnen daar een deel van hun dagbesteding uitoefenen op loopafstand van ‘t Valkennest. Na de voltooiing van dit project eind 2020, voelde ik een leegte en werd het me duidelijk dat als ik dit - (woon-)projecten begeleiden - de rest van mijn professionele leven zou kunnen blijven doen, ik een heel gelukkig man zou zijn. Al was ik in mijn baan als vertegenwoordiger bij Desco heel tevreden.
‘Alleen gaat het sneller, maar samen komen we verder’
De vacature voor coördinator van GiPSo kwam op het juiste moment. Ik ben begin februari gestart als coördinator van GiPSo en het voelde meteen als ‘thuiskomen’. Het bestuur vroeg me ook om de functie van (deeltijdse) coördinator bij Trefpunt STAN op me te nemen. Alle puzzelstukjes vielen op het juiste moment op hun plaats.
De renovatie/transformatie van 't Valkennest
Wat vind je belangrijk in je nieuwe job? En hoe zie je de verdere ontwikkeling van STAN en GiPSo?
STAN Brussel en GiPSo zijn in volle ontwikkeling. We willen de organisatie versterken en bouwen aan een interne werking die continuï- teit van kennis en ondersteuning biedt.
Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat we de focus moeten blijven leggen op mensen met een (meervoudige) verstandelijke handicap, hun ouders, broers en zussen. Het kenniscentrum, dat tot voor kort gedragen werd door Lies van Urk, is een essentiële pijler die we gaan uitbreiden en meer bekendheid zullen geven. Na een moeizame zoektocht hebben we iemand gevonden die deze taak op zich zal nemen vanaf begin oktober.
Verder moeten we als team nadenken over hoe we STAN Brussel weer dichter bij de lokale afdelingen kunnen brengen. Zij verrichten al jaren baanbrekend werk. We willen ook samen met hen nadenken over hoe we de organisatie best klaarmaken voor nieuwe uitdagingen die op ons pad afkomen. Daarnaast willen we de lokale werking voor mensen met een verstandelijke beperking in Brussel nieuw leven inblazen en deze groep weer activeren. Het creatieve en out-of-the-box denken van Christine Stanczyk die het team komt versterken, zal ons daarbij helpen.
Een heldere visie
Wat is je visie voor onze toekomst? Hoe kunnen we STAN weer relevant maken? En wat zijn je plannen met GiPSo?
We moeten tools en middelen creëren om groei voor STAN te realiseren en om nieuwe leden en vrijwilligers warm te maken voor onze activiteiten en die van onze lokale groepen.
Met ons kenniscentrum kunnen we het verschil maken en onze dienstverlening verbeteren. We moeten nog meer nadruk leggen op het behartigen van de belangen van onze leden en hun netwerk. We streven naar voldoende ondersteuning op elk moment van de werkdag. Gebruikers moeten steeds beroep kunnen doen op ondersteuning vanuit ons loket en/of kenniscentrum. De bereikbaarheid zal van 10u tot 16u en 5 dagen op 7 zijn.
GiPSo is een goed functionerende organisatie en met Tanja Virang hebben we een sterke kracht in huis om de werking te waarborgen. Natuurlijk heeft het vertrek van Bernadette enkele hiaten gecreëerd die stap voor stap weer moeten worden ingevuld.
De website van GiPSo wordt momenteel geïntegreerd in het Procurios-systeem en we willen nog nauwere samenwerking tussen STAN en GiPSo. Het zijn 2 aparte organisaties, met hun eigen accenten, maar met dezelfde principes: beide organisaties dragen via hun kennis- en ondersteuningsaanbod bij tot tot een versterking van de levenskwaliteit van onze leden en vertrekken van de behoefte van de persoon tot het bevorderen van zelfregie, streven naar een beter en volwaardig leven voor mensen met een beperking.
‘STAN/GiPSo een werkwoord gedragen door vrijwilligers’
Hoe zie je samenwerking met de andere vzw’s waarmee we een kantoor delen, Fovig en Zoom?
Het uiteindelijke doel is om één platform te creëren waarbij elke organisatie haar eigen identiteit behoudt, maar met een geïntegreerde samenwerking. Dit platform, waarvoor we nog een naam moeten bedenken - alle input is welkom! - is bijna geïnstalleerd en resulteert in verschillende, erg concrete samenwerkingsinitiatieven. Ik sta positief tegenover deze gedeelde toekomst.
Minister Crevits kwam in juni '22 op bezoek
Je hebt al gezegd dat je de banden tussen ‘Brussel’ en de lokale groepen wilt versterken, maar er is een tendens onder deze groepen om meer onafhankelijkheid te zoeken. Hoe denk je dat te herstellen?
We moeten ons werk doen en aanwezig zijn, dan zal het onderling vertrouwen zeker terugkomen. Ik ben al begonnen met eenreeks gesprekken, zowel online als persoonlijke bezoeken. Dit met de bedoeling vooral te luisteren naar wat op het terrein bij de lokale groepen leeft. Wat zijn hun vragen, behoeften, verwachtingen en verlangens? Met die info gaan we dan aan de slag.
Tot slot, stel dat je volledige vrijheid krijgt. Wat zou je dan als eerste willen realiseren?
Ik heb het vertrouwen gekregen van het bestuur. Zij staan volledig achter mijn streven om ervoor te zorgen dat we een volwaardig team hebben waarin iedereen zijn kwaliteiten kan benutten en zijn eigen accenten kan leggen en dit samen, met en voor jullie.We zullen verder timmeren aan een toekomst waarin ouders, gebruikers, brussen en vrijwilligers de naam STAN met trots uitdragen.
